Type species:
Dacus caudatus Fabricius, 1805 by original designation.
Introduction
Morphological, molecular and ecological data suggest of a closer relationship of Zeugodacus with Dacus rather than with Bactrocera(White 2006; Krosch et al. 2012). On the base of molecular analyses Virgilio et al. (2015) propose the elevation of Zeugodacus to full genus, but without indication of which species were to be included. De Meyer et al. (2015) provide a list of all species included in Zeugodacus as a supplementary file without comments to the new generic combinations and the subgenera allocations. Further molecular analyses by San Jose et al. (2018) provide further supporting evidence to this taxonomic change but stress that the taxonomy of Dacini below the genus level is still in great need of revision.
However, other authors (i.e. Hancock & Drew 2015, 2018a,b) retain Zeugodacus as subgenus of Bactrocera arguing that molecular data alone are not sufficient while the morphological characters supporting this taxonomic change are not exclusive of Zeugodacus but are present across different other Dacini.
