Species Cherax tenuimanus (Smith, 1912)

Margaret River Marron

  • Type data:
Status unknown, whereabouts unknown (Smith states that his specimens were deposited in the Natural History Museum, London, however these do not appear to have been located by recent workers. Austin & Ryan (2002) state that the holotype is in the WAM, Perth (registration WAM C127 = W AM 4131), however no "type" or holotype designation was specifically made by Smith (1912), and any specimens he examined would thus be syntypes. Also, the label on the specimen in Perth, includes only the comment 'type (suspected)?' with no indication as to who made this annotation), Margaret River, WA
Comment: A request to the ICZN (Case 3267) by Moloney et al. (2006) to reverse the type selection for the two species of "Marron", C. tenuimanus and C. cainii, so as to maintain the name C. tenuimanus for the most widespread and abundant species that is used in aquaculture in Australia and overseas, was not upheld (ICZN 2008). However, there is still no valid lectotype or neotype designation for C. tenuimanus, and therefore the nomenclatural status of both species still remains potentially unstable.
