Subtribe Maoraxiina Hołyński, 1988

Introduction

This subtribe was originally defined in a paper by Holynski (1988) after some debate about whether or not Maoraxia Obenberger was related to Mastogeniina as thought by Obenberger (1924) or belonged within the Anthaxiini. The debate about this taxon and its placement between Obenberger and Théry originally focussed on the often described New Zealand species, M. eremita (White). After new species were described from Australia, Fiji and Tonga by Bellamy & Williams (1985), the debate about placement followed the ideas of Holynski (1984), and when the number of species and generic range further expanded with a new species described from the Philippines (Bellamy 1990) and two New Caledonian species of Anthaxia by Fauvel transferred to Maoraxia (Bellamy 1991), Holynski's (1988) ideas were mostly confirmed by a cladistic placement from Bellamy (1990).
